Paper or Plastic? Environmental Economics and Science for Grades 6-12

The new Arizona State Standards for both Science and Social Studies emphasize analyzing and using data to make informed decisions. To help you teach those skills, the Thomas R. Brown Foundation is teaming up with The STEMAZing Project to offer a one-day workshop in environmental economics and science. Integrating both science and economic content—using hands-on activities—we will help you team up with another teacher in your school to create interdisciplinary lessons for students.  This workshop will be appropriate for middle and high school classrooms.

We will cover:

I. Resources used to make paper and plastic containers (natural resources and polymers)

II. Energy required to create and transport paper and plastic

III. The costs of paper and plastic to users and the environment

IV. The costs of change

V. Civic engagement: How your students can advocate for change

Since TRBF and STEMAZing are teaming up, we would like you to do the same. If you are a social studies teacher, invite a science teacher from your school to join you at the workshop, and if you teach science, find a social studies teacher. You will end up with half the work and twice the fun, and your students will benefit from seeing an inquiry using two types of information.  A win-win!  

Social studies and science teacher teams will each receive books/equipment/supplies to immediately implement and expand lessons back in your classrooms. (Kit valued at more than $50.)

Thanks to the generous support of the Thomas R. Brown Family Foundations, this workshop is being offered for FREE. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. You must register as a team – one social studies and one science teacher from the same school.
